Walking in the Footsteps of the Early Church
(Romans 15:14-33)

Sermon Summary: As Paul begins his farewell in Romans, we get to see how Paul did ministry which allows us to follow in the footsteps of what the early church was up to. We can take what we read, compare it to what we're doing as a church, and make adjustments. We may easily summarize this sermon in three words: passion, partnerships, and prayer.

Treasure Seekers Lesson:

The Way to Stay Free! (Exodus 19-20)

The Big Truth: God saves, loves, guides, and transforms!

Summary: God loved Israel very much and saved them from slavery in Egypt because He wanted them to know Him. To teach them how to live well and be happy, God gave them Ten Commandments. The Commandments include loving God the most and treating others kindly, like honoring parents and not lying or stealing. These rules were intended to show Israel who God is, how to live happily, and show God's love to the world. However, because we are full of sin, we often find ourselves breaking these rules. This is why we need a Savior, who is Jesus. Now, in Jesus, there is only one rule: to live in His love, which fulfills all the rules!

Connection to Jesus: First, God saved Israel from trouble before giving them the Ten Commandments. Similarly, before asking us to be good, God first saves us out of love through Jesus. Jesus came to defeat evil and forgive our sins, making us special and giving us new hearts to love God and others. By believing in Jesus, we are saved and given power to follow God's commands joyfully, not to earn salvation but to show our love for Him.

2) Watch the Video →

3) Discuss the Story

  • Question: Can you name the Ten Commandments? Whether you can or cannot, why is it important to know them? How can we work on learning them?
  • Question: What are some reasons that the Israelites loved God? What are some reasons that we love God? What does it mean to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength?
  • Question: What did the people hear and see when God came down the mountain? How did the people respond? What does it tell us about God that both people and mountains tremble before Him?

4) Review the Treasure Card (Memory Verse): I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. . . . You shall have no other gods before me. EXODUS 20:2–3
