Version
On a day like any other, on the dusty roads of Galilee, Philip approaches his friend Nathanael and claims to have found the Messiah spoken of by Moses. This was a radical claim, and Nathanael was skeptical. Wouldn’t you be too? Especially when you hear that this Messiah hails from a backwater town like Nazareth and bears the common name of Jesus.
Nathanael responds how anyone would in his position: with doubt. “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” He was suspicious of the Philip's claim. You have to admit, the whole idea appears irrational. But Philip is not deterred, and he does something clever. He extends a simple invitation.
What a simple, yet profound strategy! “Don't take my word for it! Come and see for yourself that there is no one like this Man!”
Notice, Philip doesn’t argue. He isn’t offended. He doesn’t whip out his apologetics book, nor does he burden himself with convincing Nathanael of the claim. Instead, what does he do? He invites his skeptic friend to encounter the person of Jesus himself, trusting that this encounter would be enough to convince him.
Beloved, this is such a wonderful way to lead others to Christ and help them believe in His name! Simply invite them to come and see Jesus! The veil that blinds the eyes of the lost can only be lifted by the light of Jesus! Good arguments and convincing defenses are, at best, dull blades, but Jesus is the two-edged sword that cuts to the heart. Allow the power and person of Jesus do the work. No one can ignore Him! In His presence, they will be left speechless, for He knows the thoughts and intents of their hearts.
"How can the Bible be true?" Come and see!
"How can Jesus be the only way to God?" Come and see!
"How could God ever forgive me ?" Come and see!
"How can I be made whole again?" Come and see!
This is our invitation to the world around us. Discover the Savior of the world, and you will see for yourself that He is good, and true, and righteous in all His ways!
