Certain mysteries in life cannot be explained, and the Scriptures do well to highlight those mysteries that alone belong to God. The greatest of these, of course, is the conception of life itself and the incredible sensibility that a baby has within the womb.
But this is only the beginning of such consciousness, for it is not only physical senses, but we see here in God’s Word that a child in the womb has even spiritual senses. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, while still in his mother’s womb was astonishingly aware of whose presence he was in — the presence of Jesus, His Creator. For this reason, John leaps with joy and is filled with the Holy Spirit just as his mother was (see Luke 1:15).
What a thought! — that John was miraculously brought to life by the hand of the Lord Jesus only 6 months before our Lord Himself would step from His lofty throne in heaven to take on the likeness of human flesh. And John, not yet born, had both human emotions and spiritual bestowment in the presence of the God-Man.
Mankind in its arrogance can come up with whatever theories they want about the child in the womb, but God’s Word has already spoken. He is the Maker of each and every child. Like a Master Architect, God uniquely forms every unique fingerprint. Like a skillful composer, God orchestrates every facet of a developing child. Therefore, what God has built, let not man think he can tear down without account. He will answer to God who formed him as well and he is a fool to think he can talk his way around it. Make no mistake: every child is the Lord’s! And we should rejoice in this truth.
