The Father of lights. What a wonderful title for our Heavenly Father! In this one verse, we see that His light is equated with many marvelous truths.
First, we learn that the light of God is generous. It shines on every person, like the sun that rises without discrimination, warming both the flowers and the weeds. And it shines especially on those who have called upon the Savior. Christ commanded His disciples not to hide their light under a basket, and this is best exemplified in God Himself, who does not turn His light away from us but shines it directly upon us. His light is a gift! And every gift is a result of His gracious light!
Second, we learn that the light of God is full of goodness and perfection. God does not give mediocre gifts; His generosity flows like a river of abundance, cascading over the rocks of our lives with relentless grace. Nor does God give sparingly; instead, He pours out His gifts like a waterfall, crashing down and showering us with gifts that sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight. The Father’s overflowing goodness is meant to refresh our souls! We are never in want. He gives perfectly in His goodness.
And is not the proof of this principle found in the giving of Jesus Christ by God for the sins of the world? Indeed it is!
Third, we discover that the light of God is extensive and far-reaching. James doesn’t mention some gifts; he emphasizes every gift! Every single good gift comes from Him. From the big blessings like your breath, your eyesight, and the beating of your heart, to the smaller comforts like your car, your coffee pot, and your couch—each one is a gift from the Father of lights! His generosity is like a bountiful harvest that cannot be fully reaped. It overflows in endless fields. The greatest proof of this abundance is found in the gift of your sure hope—the salvation of your soul—which is sealed and reserved for you in the heavens!
Beloved, do you daily give thanks to the Father of lights above for all that He has given you? Are you humbled by all that He has generously poured out over your life? With God as your true light, you have everything! He has spared no expense to bless you and keep you. Find contentment in this truth, and you will always live a rich life!
