Read Psalm 60

“Through God we will do valiantly, For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.” (Psalm 60:12)

David was a man of war. He fought hundreds of battles, each with the assurance of victory because his skill. Or was it his skill? David was, of course, a fierce warrior and a gifted strategist, but if you were to ask him the reason for his success he would point you to the LORD of heaven straightaway. "Through God", David proclaims, “we will do valiantly!"

This godly mindset, no doubt, is why David never lost a single battle in his life even when the odds were against him. Imagine it, Beloved! David, even as a young shepherd, vanquished the lion and the bear while protecting his flock (see 1 Samuel 17:34-36). Picture him as a ruddy boy likened to the stature of a stick (see 1 Samuel 17:43), but who singlehandedly took out the ominous Goliath from Gath while all the armies of Israel hid in their tents (1 Samuel 17:49).

With only 400 men, David nearly destroyed all the people of the Amalekites in one night and rescued his family, and the family of his men (see 1 Samuel 30:1-20). In the face of the scornful Philistines at Pas Dammim, the people of Israel retreated, but David with only a few of his mighty men stood their ground in the middle of a barely field and killed all of the attacking Philistines, so that “the LORD brought about a great victory." (see 1 Chronicles 11:13-14).

Ah! If only time would permit us to survey the scope of all David's battles, we would hear this frequent echo: “the LORD gave David victory wherever he went" (see 2 Samuel 8:14) so that “all the nations feared him" (see 1 Chronicles 14:17).

But was David’s life written for history’s sake only? Or does it serve a more sacred role with divine instruction for us? Indeed! They are written for us, to edify and admonish us in our journey here and now.

“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition” (1 Corinthians 10:11)

Dear friend, like our forefather David, consider that you too are fighting in a fierce battle. But your enemy is much stronger than David's enemies. The stakes of your victory are infinitely grander than any of David's. For you “do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” ( see Ephesians 6:12)

This unholy enemy of ours is hidden from the natural eyes, but is perceivable to our born again spirits. Our enemy is cunning and crafty. He is subtle, seasoned in artful deception, having the whole world is under his specific sway (see 1 John 5:19). Our foe is not the corrupt politician, not the criminal lurking in dark corners, nor any man of flesh and blood. Our sworn adversary is that serpent of old, Satan, and his demonic realm.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8–9)

Just as it was with David, so should it be with us: we must stand victorious in God alone. There exists no valiance or valor outside of Christ. It is solely in Christ’s power that we are strong. It is only by Christ’s Word that we are triumphant. It is only by Christ’s love that we are more than conquerors.

Therefore, Beloved, I amplify the words of the Apostle Paul: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (Ephesians 6:10). Cast off the feeble weapons fashioned by men, and uplift the Sword of the Spirit! Shed the powerless armor made of this world, and adorn yourself with whole Armor of God!

Let David's proclamation resonate in your hearts! Make it the fervent conviction of your soul. Let it these words be the banner of your life:"Through God we shall do valiantly!"

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ…” (2 Corinthians 2:14)

“We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
