What a vision! The prophet Isaiah transports us into the throne room of God where we are immediately confronted with majestic glory and divine resplendence. Even the Seraphim who were appointed to cry out “Holy, Holy, Holy” were given extra wings to cover their faces lest they see the face of God.
The whole experience for a mortal man must have been overwhelming. The thunderous booms of worship, the smoke of the Almighty’s glory, the mountainous throne which stood on high — all of it put Isaiah in a complete stupor!
Indeed, we see this time and time again in Scripture when a prophet sees the throne room of God. Ezekiel fell on his face (see Ezekiel 1:28), Daniel lost all of his strength (see Daniel 10:5-9), and John the Apostle fell over as a dead man (see Revelation 1:17). When Moses requested to see God’s glory, he was placed into the cleft of a rock to watch as God passed by, but was covered by the hand of God lest he would see God’s face and die (see Exodus 33:18-23).
And now the prophet Isaiah sees the Lord seemingly from a distance, high and lifted up, with only the train of God’s robe in view which was enough to fill the heavenly temple. The vision is so transcendent it’s hard for us to even imagine, and yet it still leaves us in awe. And it was from this view that Isaiah becomes undone by his own sinfulness and fears his own life!
We must ourselves be provoked as well! What should be our response to such a majestic God? It is the unfortunate habit of our humanity to bring God down to us and to think of God in ordinary ways. But there is nothing at all ordinary about our God, is there? All the earth is full of His glory and even that is only a fragment of His entire majesty!
We must view God as He is — high and lifted up — and remember that it was His humility which brought Him down to us. But Christ’s mission of redemption is complete, and He is now ascended on high, robed in glory, and worthy of all of our adoration.
Beloved, is your view of God high and lifted up? — or low and ordinary? Do you adore Him in His majesty? Oh! — may we wake up each morning blessing the God of Heaven for who He is. And may the vision of Isaiah wake us up to how awesome our God truly is!
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we give you all honor, glory, and praise! Amen.

Paul the Apostle uses the word comfort five times in just these two verses. And if you read on, Paul will use the same word five more times in the next three verses making a total of ten uses in this small section. I generally tend to...
