Read Psalm 91

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” (Psalm 91:1–2)

There is a secret place where we are always safe, and where our communion with God is vibrant and secure. When we find ourselves in this secret place, the presence of the Most High is there, protecting our heart and guarding our thoughts. He gives His comfort and strength to all who trust in Him.

Where is this secret place, you might ask? Is it found in a church building? Or is it up high on the mountaintops away from the hustle of life? Is it nearby in the prayer closet or is far away across the seas? To answer this question, we must adjust our scopes, for the secret place is not a where but a who.

I’m reminded of the words of our precious Lord —

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothingAs the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” (John 15:5, 9)

Jesus is the secret place of the Most High. When we come to Him, entering boldly into His throne of grace, we are brought immediately under the shadow of the Almighty where we find refuge and rest.

Christian, if you are weary then run to the secret place where Jesus will give you rest for your soul (see Matthew 11:28). If you are in danger, run to the secret place where Jesus will be your fortress from evil (see 2 Timothy 4:17-18). If you are anxious, run to the secret place where Jesus gives the peace which surpasses all understanding (see Philippians 4:7). If you are discouraged and depressed, run to the secret place where Jesus will give you joy and pleasure (see Psalm 16:11). If you are lonely, take heart Belolved! — run to the secret place where Jesus will commune with you better than ten thousand friends (see James 4:8; Revelation 3:20). If you need to laugh, He will laugh with you, and if you need to weep, He will weep with you.

Every possible need can be met under the shadow of the Almighty. And each and every void we experience can be filled by abiding in Christ, our tender Savior. David once wrote the following words during his loneliness and uncertain exile —

“…Your lovingkindness is better than life” (Psalm 63:3)

So let us turn to this psalm with hearts full of faith in this wonderful truth. In troubled times, when you face dangers and uncertainties, follow David to the secret place where you can fellowship with the Lord. For there you will find assurance in all things, knowing that He will never leave you nor forsake you. His love will carry you through the fiercest of storms (see Romans 8:38-39). Simply trust Him and abide in His love.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.” (Isaiah 43:1–2)

When sin is buried in secret, inevitable defeat is witnessed in the open. The nation of Israel was commanded by God not to take any of the loot of their enemies for themselves. These things were considered accursed (see Joshua 6:18).
