Beloved, there is hardly a verse that has so much divine energy packed into only a handful of words. The author of Hebrews beckons us to draw near to Christ, who is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s nature. Just as Jesus said to His disciple Philip —
Even more, it must impact us right now to think that all things are being upheld by the word of Christ’s power. Look around you. Look out the window. Every blade of grass, every star in the sky, and every breath we take is sustained by the Almighty Christ. And it should cause us to marvel and cling to Him with what finite strength we have been granted.
But let us look a little deeper still. The word upholding means to carry or to bear. It's actually the same word used to describe Jesus when He bore His own cross. Think on that for a moment — while Jesus was bearing the cross that we all should have been crucified on, He was also bearing the universe by the word of His power which we all exist in.
When you compare such mighty power against ourselves, we must immediately admit how weak we truly are. Even the best of us can only uphold something for a meager amount of time — and yet, the Lord Jesus Christ is continually upholding all things in the universe.
To make things even more emphatic, we must realize that all things are being upheld by nothing more than a single word of His power. Jesus is not upholding the universe by constantly have to speak at it. Nor is He having to exhaustively use His authority to command it to be so. No! — none of these are fitting. Just a single word from Jesus is upholding all things. Oh, how I wish I knew what word that was!
This devotion alone is trying to prove one simple point of theology, and it will take me approximately 750 words to do so. I can barely make my point in so many words, and yet Christ is upholding all things with just one word. Think on that!
One of the most contentious debates in physics right now is whether or not there is such a thing as dark matter. The reason for this debate is because there are constant anomalies in the universe being observed that are contrary to the laws of physics. How entire galaxies continue to remain and are being held together, as if someone had stringed them by some invisible thread, is just one example of this mystery. To explain away how this is happening, some physicists have theorized that at least 85% of the universe must be made up of some kind of invisible dark matter which is holding everything together.
Call it what you want — this invisible thread that has strung the universe together is the single commanding word of Christ! How many mysteries of the universe must mankind discover before he is humbled to admit that there is an Almighty God behind it?
Does this humble you? It should humble all of us. We are here because God willed it and Christ spoke it. Take a deep breath right now — even that single breath is a gift from God which exists by the spoken word of Christ. Today, as you go about your business, remember that everything — every step you take, every blink of your eye, and every beat of your heart — is possible because of your Savior, Jesus Christ.

The great prophet Moses reminds Israel of God’s love for them and God’s choosing of them as His special people. But a vital clarification is made. The LORD does not choose or love based on the might, power or strength of a person...
