"Is there a book you recommend for...?" "Where can I learn more about...?" "What is the best resource for...?" These are some of the most frequent questions I receive as a pastor. I love it when people are genuinely hungry to understand more about God and are curious about His will for their lives. Besides wholeheartedly recommending the Word of the God, which should always be our first and foremost Book to reference, sometimes we need help from someone who has studied the topic more thoroughly. This is where "books" come in.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm an avid reader and curious student. (I'm generally engaged in reading 3 to 4 books at any given time). As such, it's been suggested to me on multiple occasions that I should post my book recommendations, and even what books I'm currently reading so others could benefit as well. I've agreed to do this, in hopes that it will benefit our fellowship and anyone in the body of Christ.
Below, you'll find my handpicked selection of books that inspire faith, provide biblical guidance, and will deepen your understanding of God, the Bible, Life, Marriage, Parenting, and many other biblically vital topics. I will also leave my own reviews on the books listed below, and why I've recommended them. To keep it interesting, I'll add a gold star to books as a "must-read" and a rare thumbs down for books I think fell short.
Please keep in mind that there is no human book or human author I agree with 100%, as should be expected. I trust that you will take my book list as recommendations on a subject, not as endorsements of all an author says or believes. "Test all things, hold fast to what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
Almost all books I have are purchased from Amazon or Crossway, where you can find them easily at a good price. If you would like to access my library, I am generally more than happy to lend books out as well.
Remember, there is no book that can replace the authority of Scripture. In the words of Richard Baxter, "Let all writers have their due esteem, but compare none of them with the Word of God." The list below is nothing but table scraps compared to the riches of wisdom found in God's Word. I advise you to always start with the Bible before anything else. Otherwise, dive in!
For the Truth,
~ Pastor Greg

Bible Study
Honestly, was disappointed in this one. I think if you’re going to write a book titled “How to Memorize Scripture,” you should stick to expectations. The majority of the very short 40-page book was “why” we shoud memorize Scripture, and a very small part of it was underwhelming tactics on how, which I didn’t find particularly useful. I think the author would have served his audience better by making it a blog post. Not to mention, his tactic on making a written covenant with God seemed oddly contradictory to Christ’s words in Matthew 5:34-37. All in all, is this book worth the read? Maybe. Is it worth $9.99 to buy? Definitely not.

ESV Bible Translation

While I preach out of the NKJV, my favorite translation of the Bible is actually the ESV. (Feel free to ask me why sometime). I have the New Testament Set of this ESV Scripture Journal, and each book of the New Testament is a separate journal book, with the Scriptures on the left and a journal to pen in on the right. It's really a unique way to enjoy the Scriptures while being encouraged to write your thoughts down as you read.

I would happily give this to any man who wants to enter pastoral ministry for the first time. This is a newer book, and a great one for those who are exploring the calling of “pastor” on their lives. D.A. Carson
Expositing
Pastoral
As popular of an author as D.A. Carson is, this was the first book I ever read by him, and only recently. Carson has a super-intellect and is scholarly in his approach to interpreting God’s Word. For that, some might find his writing style arrogant, as I did — but in the end — it shows that he has a passion for the accuracy of teaching God’s Word. This book shows mistakes and fallacies pastors often make in interpreting Scripture, and I believe I’m a better teacher because of it.

Sadly, church displine is taboo in today’s church culture. But Jay Adams shows, not only the necessity of church discipline, but also the blessing that it brings to the church itself. It’s not just for pastors and elders — the entire body of Christ is to be part of church discipline in order that we would see more fruit in each other’s lives. I highly recommend this read.
J. Oswald Sanders
Pastoral
Leadership
While I don’t think this book has nearly as much fervor and “aha!” moments as his other book, “Christ Indwelling and Enthroned,” Sanders brings along many convicting elements we need to be aware of as leaders, whether of a church, our homes, or elsewhere.
Leonard Ravenhill
Pastoral
Preaching
Caution — contents hot! This book will seriously offend you. The first time I read it I threw it across the room. (And I don’t ever do that with my books!) While I have many disagreements with Ravenhill in regards to practical and theological pastoring, I cannot disagree with his passion to seek and save the lost. When I need courage to go preach the gospel to the lost, I often find myself going back to this one. You will get burned!
C.H. Spurgeon
Pastoral
Preaching
This is a collection of lectures from Spurgeon to the students of his Pastor’s College, which he found to raise up pastors. His lectures cover various topics from pastoral ministry, to preaching, to leadership, sermon prep and other miscellaneous advice. You may find some of Spurgeon’s standards harsh, but it was for a given time and purpose. For example, if a man could not reach a certain volume in his preaching voice, Spurgeon was convinced the man was not called to preach. Not sure that’s a concern with microphones anymore, and I don't remember the apostles' mentioning this requirement. Even still, it's a great book (thick) book!
