recommended books from pastor greg

"Is there a book you recommend for...?" "Where can I learn more about...?" "What is the best resource for...?" These are some of the most frequent questions I receive as a pastor. I love it when people are genuinely hungry to understand more about God and are curious about His will for their lives. Besides wholeheartedly recommending the Word of the God, which should always be our first and foremost Book to reference, sometimes we need help from someone who has studied the topic more thoroughly. This is where "books" come in.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm an avid reader and curious student. (I'm generally engaged in reading 3 to 4 books at any given time). As such, it's been suggested to me on multiple occasions that I should post my book recommendations, and even what books I'm currently reading so others could benefit as well. I've agreed to do this, in hopes that it will benefit our fellowship and anyone in the body of Christ.

Below, you'll find my handpicked selection of books that inspire faith, provide biblical guidance, and will deepen your understanding of God, the Bible, Life, Marriage, Parenting, and many other biblically vital topics. I will also leave my own reviews on the books listed below, and why I've recommended them. To keep it interesting, I'll add a gold star to books as a "must-read" and a rare thumbs down for books I think fell short.

Please keep in mind that there is no human book or human author I agree with 100%, as should be expected. I trust that you will take my book list as recommendations on a subject, not as endorsements of all an author says or believes. "Test all things, hold fast to what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

Almost all books I have are purchased from Amazon or Crossway, where you can find them easily at a good price. If you would like to access my library, I am generally more than happy to lend books out as well.

Remember, there is no book that can replace the authority of Scripture. In the words of Richard Baxter, "Let all writers have their due esteem, but compare none of them with the Word of God." The list below is nothing but table scraps compared to the riches of wisdom found in God's Word. I advise you to always start with the Bible before anything else. Otherwise, dive in!

For the Truth,
~ Pastor Greg

The intentional father

Jon Tyson · 2021

Parenting

Fatherhood

Manhood

For any and every father who has boys, especially teenage boys, I could not recommend a better book for you. It's extremely practical, biblical, inspiring and convicting. Men — you need to read this. I believe mothers would also benefit from it as well.

D.l. moody on spiritual leadersihp

By Steve Miller · 2004

Leadership

Biography

Devotional

I've been taking my time through this one. I read it once 15 years ago. All in all, very good, inspiring and encouraging. D.L. Moody is a man worth following as an example. I do find Steve Miller's writing style a little dry at times. I think this book would be best enjoyed as a devotional for leaders, not so much as a read through.

How to memorize scripture for life

By Andrew M. Davis · 2024

Bible Study

Honestly, was disappointed in this one. I think if you’re going to write a book titled “How to Memorize Scripture,” you should stick to expectations. The majority of the very short 40-page book was “why” we shoud memorize Scripture, and a very small part of it was underwhelming tactics on how, which I didn’t find particularly useful. I think the author would have served his audience better by making it a blog post. Not to mention, his tactic on making a written covenant with God seemed oddly contradictory to Christ’s words in Matthew 5:34-37. All in all, is this book worth the read? Maybe. Is it worth $9.99 to buy? Definitely not.

the nicene creed

Phillip Cary · 2023

Church History

Theology

Doctrine

A refreshing look at the Nicene Creed and why it was written. For anyone who wants to learn more about the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith, why they exists, and how early church fathers concluded on them from the Scriptures, this book is short, simple and to the point.

Expositional Leadership

By R. Scott Page & Jim Shaddix · 2024

Pastoral

Preaching

Bible Study

Excellent book. Excellent book. It will easily become a book I hand out to young and new pastors in the ministry, as it clearly outlines the responsibities of expositing God’s Word clearly, intentionally, and precisely as the primary means of leading and guiding the church. I will certainly be reading it again.

decisional preaching

Jim Shaddix

Preaching

Pastoral

Leadership

This book delves into the mysterious connection between our preaching and people's decision for the truth, highlighting the crucial role of faithful execution for spiritual decision-making. It's an interesting perspective, and I'm not sure I was convinced of the premise. But there are some good nuggets in here.

family shepherds

Voddie Baucham Jr. · 2010

Parenting

Fatherhood

Manhood

This book emphasizes the crucial role of fathers in leading and shepherding their families. Baucham highlights the biblical mandate for fathers to take responsibility in teaching, disciplining, and nurturing their children. Men, gear up. It's a hard hitter, but also equipping and encouraging.

The reformed pastor

By Richard Baxter · 1629

Pastoral

Leadership

Preaching

A 400 year old treatise from one pastor to a group of other pastors. For Christmas, my wife purchased a custom-leather bound reprint of the second edition. It's my most valued book in my library right now. Highly recommended for anyone aspiring to ministry. Might be the best book on shepherding, besides the pastoral letters by Paul himself. This is my 4th time reading through it.

I tend to read these over and over again — at least once every couple of years.

the knowledge of the holy

A.W. Tozer ·  1961

Theology

Devotional

A classic. If you've known me for more than 2 minutes, I've probably recommended this book to you. Tozer doesn't waste a word in this short, but dynamite book on the attributes of God. A must read.

christ indwelling & enthroned

J. Oswald Sanders · 2001

Christology

Christian Living

I was first gifted this book when I was 17 years old. I read it and I didn't get it. It was too meaty for me at the time. I picked it up 5 years later and it changed my life. If you want to see Christ reign in your life, then this book will teach you what needs to happen.

Miles J. Standford · 1981

Christian Living

Romans

This book took me by surprise. It was recommended to by a seasoned saint, so I bought a copy. I read it in one sitting. It changed my life and further solidified my understanding of the Book of Romans. My wife and I frequent this book together for our devotional time.

let me be a woman

Elizabeth Elliot · 1998

Womanhood

Marriage

I've only read 50% of this book, and my wife has given me her blessed summaries onthe other 50%. Might sound odd to you for me to read a book like this, but it is biblically spot on. In a culture where women are being robbed of their God given design, role and joy, this book is a must read.

created to be his help meet

Debi Pearl · 2014

Womanhood

Marriage

Parenting

There is hardly a book that has helped guard the biblical role of the wife, and transformed marriages by its principles than this one. The author can be rough around the edges, but it fits the mandate. Women, expect to be shocked and offended (at least, culturally), but if you listen and apply the truths of this book (all biblical), it can transform your marriage instantly (and I do mean instantly).

marriage, divorce & remarriage

Jay Adams · 1998

Marriage

There is a lot of stigma surrounding divorce and remarriage among Christian circles. But what do the Scriptures teach about it? Jay Adams excellently exposits God's Word on this matter, and brings great insight to an often misunderstood topic.

how to study

Greg Koukl · 2019

Evangelism

Logic

An extraordinary book that I pass out, recommend and buy for others all the time. It will teach you how to defend your faith by simply asking questions and using logic. Plus, it keeps you out of hot seat, and puts you on the offensive in hard conversations, rather than the defensive. This book is a must read, whether you're a beginner at sharing your faith or seasoned.

the problem of god

Mark Clark · 2017

Logic

Theology

Both of Mark Clark's "problem" books are outstanding. He is also fun and easy to read. In this book, he handles skeptic's challenges about the existence of God, and how we have adequate proof to believe in the God as revealed in the Bible.

the problem of jesus

Mark Clark · 2021

Logic

Historic Reliability

This book delves into the fundamental questions surrounding Jesus' identity and impact. Clark explores how Jesus challenges our assumptions and confronts the dilemmas faced by contemporary skeptics, providing thought-provoking insights on the relevance and credibility of Christ in the modern world.

mere christianity

C.S. Lewis · 1952

Logic

A profound work that presents a logical and thoughtful defense of Christian beliefs and morality. Lewis explores common ground among different denominations and addresses key theological concepts, making a compelling case for the essence of Christianity. A must read for all Christians.

the reason for god

Timothy Keller · 2009

Logic

Theology

A thought-provoking exploration of common doubts and objections to Christianity. Keller addresses skeptical arguments and presents rational and compelling reasons for belief in God, inviting us to consider the intellectual credibility and significance of faith in today's world.

so what's the difference?

Fritz Ridenour · 2001

Evangelism

Historic Reliability

This is a concise and accessible guide that compares and contrasts the most popular religions of today, and shows how they all fall short of historically, logically, and morally — except for Christianity. I recommend this book for those who want to know why Christianity is the truth among all religions.

why grace changes everything

Chuck Smith

Romans

Christian Living

The beauty of Chuck Smith is his simplicity, and in my opinion, this book is his masterpiece. I first read it when I was 17, and it rocked my condemnable teenage world and showed me God's grace for the first time. This book, in part, is responsible for leading me back to Christ in my wayward years.

on being a servant of god

Warren Weirsbe · 1994

Christian Living

Ministry

Pastoral

I've been reading this book since I was 20. This book is extraordinarily practical, inspiring and full of wisdom. It works great as a devotional, or as a one sit down read through. If you want to find joy in serving others, and discover the heart of God in helping others, this book has great application. Couldn't recommend it enough.

the cost of discipleship

Dietrich Bonhoeffer · 1937

Discipleship

Christian Living

If you're unfamiliar with Bonhoeffer, he was a German theologian and key figure in the resistance against Nazi regime, known for his courageous stand on Christian ethics. He was was hanged by the Nazis at the Flossenbürg concentration camp. But before then, he wrote this book. It's a brilliant, eloquent, and difficult read — but well worth your time.

a general introduction to the bible

Normal Geisler, William Nix

Bibliology

History

Translations

In my opinion, the best single source book and resource on Bibliology. Geisler is easy to read, extremely logical, and has one of the best grasps on church history from any author I've read. It's a big book, and you might not read it cover to cover like I did (I'm a nerd), but it's a fantastic resource to have on your shelf.

many infallible proofs

Henry Morris

Bibliology

History

Translations

I love Dr. Henry Morris. He is one of the smartest men to ever walk this planet, but his care for his readers is pastoral by nature. He will minister to you as he writes, while also giving you a substantial, logical understanding of the evidences of the Christian faith.

from god to us

Norman Geisler, William Nix

Bibliology

History

Translations

Another great resource by Normal Geisler. You’ll find many overlapping themes in this book from “A General Introduction to the Bible,” but you’re likely to find this easier to digest. If you already have the other book, no need to get this one.

the bedrock of christianity

Justin Bass · 2021

Bibliology

History

Recently read this back in 2021. It’s a new and fresh angle on looking at the solid facts of Christianity. Bass approaches the Christian religion and the New Testament from a purely historical stance, showing that even the most critical skeptics of the New Testament cannot deny the foundational bedrock of facts surrounding the New Testament. If you any doubts about Christianity — read this. It will change your mind in a heart beat.

how we got the bible

Neil Lightfoot

Bibliology

History

Translations

This is a personal favorite. I lend it out all the time. A simple read and short book. Perfect for those who are just beginning to delve into the topic of Bibliology and have questions about how we got our Bibles.

introduction to the bible

Christine Hayes

Bibliology

History

Translations

If “A General Introduction to the Bible” by Geisler is at the exhaustive end, and “How We Got the Bible” by Lightfoot is at the simple end, this book by Hayes shoots right down the middle. A great resource to have on understanding the logic and facts about our Bibles.

the bible in translation

Bruce Metzger

Bibliology

History

Translations

A short book, but a hard read. Metzger is a scholar, and you know it as soon as you begin to read any of his books. If you want a scholarly approach to the text of Scripture, Metzger is your man.

unique bibles

the complete word study of the NEW testament

Spiros Zodhiates · 1994

Bible

Reference

I used this Bible religiously in my early years of ministry and it is responsible for helping me become more fluent in biblical Greek just by using it! It has nearly every Greek Word referenced right next to the English Translation, and is a great tool for studying the New Testament Scriptures, especially if you're unfamiliar with biblical Greek.

the complete word study of the old testament

Spiros Zodhiates · 1994

Bible

Reference

This is an exhaustive Bible, that has nearly every Hebrew Word referenced right next to the English Translation. It's a fantastic resource and tool for studying the Old Testament Scriptures. I don't know a lot of Hebrew compared to Greek, so this Bible is very helpful when I'm studying the OT.

ESV Illuminated Scripture Journal

ESV Bible Translation

Bible

While I preach out of the NKJV, my favorite translation of the Bible is actually the ESV. (Feel free to ask me why sometime). I have the New Testament Set of this ESV Scripture Journal, and each book of the New Testament is a separate journal book, with the Scriptures on the left and a journal to pen in on the right. It's really a unique way to enjoy the Scriptures while being encouraged to write your thoughts down as you read.

ESV Illuminated Bible, Art Journaling Edition

ESV Bible Translation

Bible

I admit — I don't actually have this Bible, but I have seen one in the wild before and I thought it was very creative. It's still 100% the ESV Bible, but it has wide margins and beautiful hand-lettered art on every page. I think women and teenage girls would enjoy this the most. It would be a great birthday or Christmas gift.

THE BIGGEST STORY BIBLE

Kevin DeYoung · Children's Bible

Bible

Children

Parenting

If your children are part of our Treasure Seekers Ministry, you should already have one, and if you do, I already know you love it. For those with kids, I couldn't recommend a better children's Bible. Keep in mind, it is not a translation, but a compilation of 104 Bible Stories that weave together the narrative of Christ's redemption from Genesis to Revelation.

the visual word: illustrated outlines of the new testament

Patrick Schreiner · 2021

Bible

Reference

This is just a fun book to have. It's not a translation, or even a story Bible, but it outlines all of the books of the New Testament in an artistic, iconographic style. It's great to have laying around on a coffee table to look at when you're on your downtime. I love mine.

preachers & preaching

Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Parenting

Fatherhood

Manhood

I love this book. Martyn Lloyd Jones preached at Westminster Chapel in England for 30 years, and during that time God let him witness revival. What did Jones do that was so special. He elevated the task of preaching God’s Word as the most important duty of a pastor, and he faithfully taught for 30 years. Jones is more than qualified to write on the subject, and this book will teach, encourage and challenge any pastor and interested teacher of God’s Word.

called to preach

Steven Lawson · 2022

Preaching

Expositing

Pastoral

I would happily give this to any man who wants to enter pastoral ministry for the first time. This is a newer book, and a great one for those who are exploring the calling of “pastor” on their lives. Lawson does a great job in showing the duties of a preacher in revering God’s Word, and teaching God’s Word clearly and expositionally.

homiletics & pastoral theology

William G.T. Shedd

Expositing

Pastoral

Theology

Another reverent presentation of the duties and calling of a pastor to faithfully preach the Word. Not to mention — it’s a classic from a prominent pastor and theologian. I enjoyed it very much.

exegetical fallacies

D.A. Carson

Expositing

Pastoral

As popular of an author as D.A. Carson is, this was the first book I ever read by him, and only recently. Carson has a super-intellect and is scholarly in his approach to interpreting God’s Word. For that, some might find his writing style arrogant, as I did — but in the end — it shows that he has a passion for the accuracy of teaching God’s Word. This book shows mistakes and fallacies pastors often make in interpreting Scripture, and I believe I’m a better teacher because of it.

handbook of church discipline

Jay Adams

Pastoral

Theology

Church

Sadly, church displine is taboo in today’s church culture. But Jay Adams shows, not only the necessity of church discipline, but also the blessing that it brings to the church itself. It’s not just for pastors and elders — the entire body of Christ is to be part of church discipline in order that we would see more fruit in each other’s lives. I highly recommend this read.

spiritual leadership

J. Oswald Sanders

Pastoral

Leadership

While I don’t think this book has nearly as much fervor and “aha!” moments as his other book, “Christ Indwelling and Enthroned,” Sanders brings along many convicting elements we need to be aware of as leaders, whether of a church, our homes, or elsewhere.

why revival tarries

Leonard Ravenhill

Pastoral

Preaching

Caution — contents hot! This book will seriously offend you. The first time I read it I threw it across the room. (And I don’t ever do that with my books!) While I have many disagreements with Ravenhill in regards to practical and theological pastoring, I cannot disagree with his passion to seek and save the lost. When I need courage to go preach the gospel to the lost, I often find myself going back to this one. You will get burned!

lectures to my students

C.H. Spurgeon

Pastoral

Preaching

This is a collection of lectures from Spurgeon to the students of his Pastor’s College, which he found to raise up pastors. His lectures cover various topics from pastoral ministry, to preaching, to leadership, sermon prep and other miscellaneous advice. You may find some of Spurgeon’s standards harsh, but it was for a given time and purpose. For example, if a man could not reach a certain volume in his preaching voice, Spurgeon was convinced the man was not called to preach. Not sure that’s a concern with microphones anymore, and I don't remember the apostles' mentioning this requirement. Even still, it's a great book (thick) book!
