This eighth chapter of Romans has been known as the pinnacle and most sacred section in all of Scripture. An old saint of God has called it “the triumphant conclusion” to the Christian life. Spurgeon called it a “banquet for the souls of God’s hungry servants.” Truly, no man “ever said anything grander,” writes Erasmus.
If God’s Word is the Sword of the Spirit, then this eighth chapter is the sheath by which is it secured and fastened to the Christian. It is the Mercy Seat of the Most Holy Place in the New Testament where the cherubim dwell and where God’s presence is most potent. Praise our Lord that as a Holy Priesthood we may enter boldly at any hour, unlike the first priests who only could enter but once per year.
The subjects of this chapter include heavenly doctrines like the Removal of Condemnation in Christ (see Romans 8:1-8), the Power of the Resurrection in the Christian (see Romans 8:9-11), our Adoption through the Spirit of God (see Romans 8:12-17), our Future Glory (see Romans 8:18-25) and the Intercession of the Spirit for our weaknesses (see Romans 8:26-30). In light of all of these divine truths, in verse 31 we are presented with, perhaps, the only question in eternity that matters.
Every child of God must answer this question in the soul and believe once and for all. This is the position that God has taken on your behalf. God is for you! Do you believe that, Christian?
It is better that a hundred thousand enemies be against you each and every day than that God be against you. Whatever heated crucible your life may be dissolving in, you can praise God that it will never be the heat of God’s wrath. If you have God’s love, what other love is there that compares? If you have Christ’s favor, what other men are there whose favor compares? If you have the Spirit’s intercession, what other means of comfort is there to live by?
No wonder Paul would say only a few verses later:
Well then, what shall we say to these things? What other response could we have but to rest and rejoice in these wonderful truths?
It is the good pleasure of God’s will to love you as His own (see Ephesians 1:5), therefore take your rest in this doctrine. Let it ease you like good medicine.
It is the good pleasure of the Father to give you the Kingdom (see Luke 12:32), therefore rejoice in this truth and let it be sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

Propitiation. A big word, isn’t it? But oh such a wonderful word! Within it is planted the seed of the Gospel and the reason why we are able to receive salvation at no cost.

This letter from Paul to Philemon is the real life story of the prodigal son that Jesus taught. It has all the same flavors and tones. Onesimus was the prodigal, as it were, and Philemon the father figure.
