Today's Bible Reading:

Matthew 4:1–11

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,

‘In their hands they shall bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Reflection:

Discerning and Dispelling Lies

What lie of Satan are you believing today? Satan often targets our struggles, pitching lies where we are most vulnerable. Perhaps he’s convincing you that a recurring sin isn’t that serious, or telling you to give up in an area where God wants to grant you victory. Maybe he whispers that God’s grace isn’t sufficient for your shortcomings, or that Jesus is merely a historical figure rather than the Savior. He may even lead you to believe that you are unimportant and unloved or that true happiness lies in possessions or achievements. These are all lies, beloved!

To gain victory over these deceptions, we must discern and dispel. First, we need to know God’s truth to recognize Satan’s lies. Understanding Scripture equips us to see through partial truths that lead us astray. Second, we must actively dispel these lies by preaching God’s truth to ourselves, just as Jesus did when confronted by temptation. For every lie Satan throws at us, there is a powerful truth in God’s Word to counter it. When we declare these truths, we begin to break free from the chains of deception.

Remember, as Jesus said, “Know the truth, and the truth shall set you free!” (John 8:32). Let us commit to knowing His Word and living in the freedom it brings.
