Today's Bible Reading:

1 John 2:1-11

2 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

The Test of Knowing Him

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.

He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Reflection:

Not a Flicker!

Do we even know what "no darkness" looks like? This is hard for us to comprehend, as there is always a shadow in our experience and always a dark corner where light is not found. However, this is never the case with God, beloved. We must bury this seed of truth deep in our hearts: God is the perfect light, constant and unchanging. In a world filled with darkness, it can be tempting to blame God for the struggles we face. When something bad happens in our lives, frustration can easily lead us to question His goodness. Yet, how can we hold the only good, constant source of light responsible for the darkness around us? God is not the problem; He is the answer to all darkness.

Are you blaming God for something today? Are you doubting His goodness in your life? Remember, it’s like blaming the sun in the sky for the darkness of outer space; the sun is what brings light, not what takes it away. Instead of directing irrational frustration toward God, let us acknowledge that He is the only true good in our lives. As Psalm 36:9 reminds us, “For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light, we see light.” Embrace the truth that God’s light dispels darkness and brings clarity, hope, and life.

Self Evaluation:

How can I prioritize this truth in my life this week?
Am I blaming God for something in my life? Where do I need to trust God again?

Prayer

God, I'm sorry where I have failed to trust You, and even blamed You, when instead I should know that You alone are good and true. Teach me to trust You when there's darkness around me, and to allow Your light to give me strength.
