Message Title

The Light is Born

Where in the Bible

Luke 2:25-38

The Principle

The birth of Jesus was the dawning of a new day for the world.

Message Summary:

The significance of Christ’s birth was not just that God was miraculously born of the virgin Mary into the world. The significance of Christ’s birth also marked the dawning of a new day — a new era — by which mankind was pursued by God, and would continue to be pursued by God through Jesus Christ.

Key Verse:

“For my eyes have seen Your salvation Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”” (Luke 2:30–32)

Today's Bible Reading:

Luke 2:25-38

Luke 2:25–38 (NKJV)

Simeon’s Prophecy

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

29     “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,

According to Your word;

30     For my eyes have seen Your salvation

31     Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,

32     A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,

And the glory of Your people Israel.”

33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna’s Testimony

36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Reflection:

The Dawn of a New Day

How often do you forget the privilege of living on this side of God's plan in world history? Have you fully grasped the blessing it is to be alive during a time when Christ, the Light, has dawned, and His salvation is nearer than ever before. Oh, what the people and prophets of old would have given to experience the day when Christ, the Light, shines brightly! The Apostle Peter reminds us of this in his first letter, saying, “This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you” (1 Peter 1:10 NLT). Jesus also conveyed this truth to His disciples, stating, “For assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it” (Matthew 13:17 NKJV).

We are living on the other side of history, in an age where God’s full revelation of who He is in Christ has been delivered to us. The light has dawned, and we are no longer waiting for it like Abraham, David, or Isaiah. We stand in the full clarity of the Gospel of Light! As the Apostle Paul beautifully articulates, “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV). Beloved, the birth of Jesus marked the dawning of a new day for the world, and we are privileged to live in that new day! Let us reflect on this gift of light that has come into our lives.

TALK IT OVER

Family Devotion or Group Discussion Questions

What does Simeon's declaration in Luke 2:30-32, that Jesus is "a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel," reveal about the universal nature of Christ's mission?

Simeon and Anna both exemplify faith and patience as they awaited the arrival of the Messiah. How can their examples inform our understanding of waiting on God’s promises in our own lives?
